Expert Treatment Available at Community Care Urology – Clifton Park
Peyronie’s Disease is a condition that causes abnormal curvature of the penis due to scar tissue forming under the skin. It can lead to pain, erectile dysfunction, and difficult or painful intercourse—for both the patient and their partner. While it’s more common than most people realize, effective treatment requires expertise that many providers don’t offer.
At Community Care Urology, our team offers specialized, compassionate care for men dealing with Peyronie’s Disease. Drawing on experience treating combat-related urologic injuries, Dr. Matthew Stringer brings advanced clinical insight and a hands-on approach to managing this complex condition.
What Causes Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie’s Disease is often inter-related with erectile dysfunction and hypogonadism (Low Testosterone) and painful intercourse (dyspareunia) for both the patient and their partner. Many do not have any history of injury or trauma. It is thought that local inflammation leads to a penile scar or lump.
Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie’s Disease presents differently for each individual, but the following are the most common and disruptive symptoms:
- Curvature or Shortening of the Penis: One of the hallmark signs is a noticeable bend or curve in the penis, which can develop gradually or appear suddenly. In some cases, men may also notice a decrease in length or girth due to internal scar tissue (plaque) restricting natural expansion.
- Indentation or Irregular Shape: Scar tissue can lead to structural changes in the shaft, causing indentations, narrowing, or even an hourglass-like shape. These distortions can make sexual activity difficult or uncomfortable.
- Pain in the Penis: Pain is common—especially during erections—but some men also feel discomfort when the penis is flaccid. While pain often improves over time, it can persist in some cases and may interfere with intimacy and quality of life.
A Personalized Treatment Approach
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for Peyronie’s. We tailor treatment based on the degree of curvature, associated symptoms, and your individual goals.
Xiaflex® Injections + “Remodeling” Therapy: For many patients, the most effective approach is a combination of in-office Xiaflex® injections, and a six-week at-home stretching program Dr. Stringer refers to as remodeling. This consists of the patient stretches and straightens the penis against the curvature several times a day to allow the Xiaflex® to be maximally effective. Xiaflex® is FDA-approved to break down the scar tissue causing the curvature.
- Quick procedure: Just a few minutes in our Clifton Park office
- Comfort first: A numbing agent is applied before the injection
- Insurance-friendly: Covered by most insurance plans
- Support resources: Learn more at Xiaflex.com
- Side effects: As with any medication, Xiaflex® has potential risks. We always have a detailed conversation with our patients about side effects, expectations, and alternatives so you can make an informed choice through shared decision-making.
Plication Surgery: For patients with more severe curvature (over 90 degrees) or those who don’t respond to Xiaflex®, plication is a surgical option. This procedure, performed at Ellis Hospital, involves placing internal stitches to correct the curvature—typically performed same-day and covered by most insurers.
Penile Implant Surgery: In complex or severe cases, a penile implant may be recommended. Performed at Ellis Hospital, this is a more advanced surgical solution designed for patients experiencing both Peyronie’s and significant erectile dysfunction.
